Snowfox Discovery Targets 2027 Natural Hydrogen Test Well in Iowa After Securing 10,000 Acres

Snowfox Discovery is advancing plans for natural hydrogen exploration in Audubon County, Iowa, with the company now targeting construction of a test well in mid-to-late 2027 after determining that additional seismic surveying will not be required for the current stage of the project.

Three Snowfox representatives recently updated the Audubon County Board of Supervisors on the exploration program, which is evaluating whether naturally occurring hydrogen can be produced using conventional oil and gas drilling techniques.

The company has so far signed contracts covering approximately 10,000 acres in Audubon County, establishing a substantial land position as it works toward its first direct subsurface test.

According to Audubon County Supervisor Chairman Kent Grabil, Snowfox has collected sufficient aerial data to proceed without conducting seismic testing before the planned well.

That represents an important change in the project's exploration sequence.

Rather than moving from remote sensing into seismic imaging before drilling, Snowfox currently intends to use its existing aerial and geological datasets to advance toward selection and construction of a test well.

The well would provide the first direct opportunity to determine whether the geological interpretation translates into a subsurface natural hydrogen occurrence at the selected location.

Snowfox's exploration thesis is tied to a much larger geological feature extending across the central United States.

Audubon County lies within a geological system described by the company as stretching from Kansas through Nebraska, Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin into Michigan.

The regional setting places Iowa within the broader Midcontinent geological corridor that has increasingly attracted attention from natural hydrogen explorers.

Snowfox cautions, however, that being located within a prospective regional geological feature is not sufficient on its own to establish a hydrogen accumulation.

Multiple geological conditions need to align for hydrogen to be generated, migrate through the subsurface and potentially accumulate in a location where it can be drilled and produced.

The planned 2027 well is intended to begin testing that geological proposition directly in Audubon County.

If natural hydrogen is identified, Snowfox's longer-term concept extends beyond simply producing the gas.

The company is considering using locally produced hydrogen as a feedstock for anhydrous ammonia production, potentially creating a direct link between subsurface hydrogen resources and the agricultural economy surrounding the project.

That potential end use is particularly relevant in Iowa, where anhydrous ammonia is widely used as a nitrogen fertilizer.
