Snowfox Discovery Advances Iowa Natural Hydrogen Project Toward First Exploration Well in 2027

Snowfox Discovery has provided an update on its natural hydrogen exploration program in Audubon County, Iowa, announcing that it has now secured sufficient leased acreage and is entering the next phase of technical evaluation ahead of a planned first exploration well in 2027.

According to Chief Commercial Officer Tom Allan, the company will spend the next nine months integrating a wide range of subsurface datasets, including seismic information, to identify the optimal location for its first exploration well. The objective is to develop a detailed understanding of the subsurface before selecting a drill site.

Snowfox's exploration strategy focuses on the Midcontinent Rift, a billion-year-old geological structure extending from Kansas through Nebraska, Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and into Michigan. The company believes the rift contains several of the geological ingredients required for naturally occurring hydrogen systems, including iron-rich volcanic rocks capable of generating hydrogen, structural traps, sealing formations, and long-term preservation conditions.

Chief Exploration Officer Michael Lawson explained that years of geological analysis—including the interpretation of thousands of historical wells, seismic imaging, gravity surveys, and magnetic datasets—have led the company to identify the Audubon County area as one of the more prospective locations along the Midcontinent Rift.

Beyond exploration,  Snowfox continues to emphasize the potential regional economic benefits of natural hydrogen if commercial quantities are ultimately discovered. The company highlighted locally produced ammonia as one potential downstream application, noting that hydrogen produced within the region could support ammonia manufacturing for local agriculture while reducing transportation requirements.

With leasing activities largely complete, the project is now transitioning from land acquisition into technical interpretation and prospect generation. If the current evaluation phase is successful, drilling could begin in 2027, representing the first direct test of Snowfox's geological model in Iowa.

The update reflects continued progress as the company advances one of the few dedicated natural hydrogen exploration programs currently underway within the Midcontinent Rift region.
