Snowfox Discovery Targets Natural Hydrogen and Local Ammonia Production in Western Iowa
Snowfox Discovery has announced its interest in Audubon County, Iowa, becoming the second natural hydrogen exploration company active in the county, following Natural Hydrogen Ventures–backed Good Energy Holding.
Snowfox Discovery, a natural hydrogen exploration company, has outlined plans to explore naturally occurring hydrogen resources in Audubon County, Iowa, positioning the region as a potential hub for locally produced anhydrous ammonia to support Midwestern agriculture.
Company representatives appeared before the Audubon County Board of Supervisors to present an exploration program that would use conventional oil and gas drilling techniques to assess subsurface hydrogen potential. Chief Commercial Officer Tom Allan emphasized that Snowfox is committed to a long-term presence in Iowa, with exploration planned over the next three to five years, and highlighted ammonia production as a key opportunity for local farmers.
“This is not a short-term project,” Allan noted, stressing the company’s financial and personal ties to Iowa and its intention to work closely with landowners and county officials throughout the process.
Chief Exploration Officer Michael Lawson explained that Audubon County sits within a broad geological corridor extending from Kansas through Nebraska, Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and into Michigan. While Iowa’s geology is complex, Lawson said multiple indicators suggest the region warrants systematic evaluation for natural hydrogen. An independent professional landman has already been engaging local landowners as part of early-stage exploration.
Snowfox has developed a high-resolution digital 3D subsurface model of Iowa, integrating data from more than 8,500 existing drill holes, surface geology, and deep-imaging techniques comparable to ultrasound. Beyond hydrogen exploration, the data may improve understanding of local groundwater systems, with plans to share findings with the Iowa Geological Survey.
