Koloma Prepares First U.S. Geologic Hydrogen Test Wells in Idaho
Koloma, the U.S. start-up backed by Amazon, United Airlines, and Bill Gates’ Breakthrough Energy Ventures, is preparing to drill its first geologic hydrogen test wells in Canyon County, Idaho. Operating locally as Cascade Exploration, the company has secured preliminary regulatory approval for one well, with a second permit pending.
The vertical wells will target iron-rich basalt formations near Notus, where natural reactions between water and rock may generate underground hydrogen. The exploration program covers roughly 280 acres and will rely on seismic surveys, core sampling, and sonic imaging to assess flow potential — without fracking or horizontal drilling.
“We are truly in exploration mode,” said Lauren Morahan, Koloma’s senior regulatory coordinator. “We are where oil and gas was a century ago.”
The project highlights Idaho’s unique volcanic geology and proximity to industrial hubs such as Nampa and Caldwell, which could support future infrastructure. Globally, Mali remains the only site with a commercial hydrogen well in operation, making Koloma’s U.S. program a pivotal test of commercial viability.
With $400 million in funding and exploration also underway in Kansas and Iowa, Koloma is positioning itself to become a leader in developing natural hydrogen as a zero-carbon fuel source for heavy industry, aviation, and long-duration energy storage.
