45-8 Energy Confirms New Helium Discovery, Advances Toward Development Phase in France
45-8 Energy has reported a new helium discovery at its Fonts-Bouillants exploration license in France, following a deep drilling campaign that successfully identified helium-bearing gas intervals at depths of up to approximately 1,500 metres.
The results confirm the presence of free gas accumulations with elevated helium concentrations and demonstrate the ability of the reservoirs to flow naturally to surface at rates compatible with industrial-scale production. Pressure monitoring also indicates that the gas system extends laterally beyond the tested area, while deeper exploration potential remains as the basement has not yet been reached.
This latest campaign builds on earlier discoveries at shallower depths, where a pilot production unit has already been operating since 2024. The decision to target deeper formations was guided by geophysical data suggesting higher concentration zones at depth, a model now validated through drilling and testing.
With measured flow rates reaching up to 53,000 Nm³ per day and estimated potential exceeding 70,000 Nm³ per day, the project is now transitioning toward development.
45-8 Energy plans to submit a mining concession application in 2026 and initiate detailed engineering studies ahead of a final investment decision, marking a shift from exploration toward industrial deployment.
At a broader level, the discovery reinforces the potential for domestic helium production in Europe, at a time when supply chains remain constrained and demand continues to grow across sectors including healthcare, semiconductors, and advanced technologies.
