Tellus Energy Solutions Secures Europe's Largest Scientific TripleH Exploration Permit

Tellus Energy Solutions has been awarded a 3,129 km² scientific exploration permit in Northern Bavaria, establishing what the company describes as Europe's largest scientific exploration area dedicated to the integrated assessment of geothermal energy, natural hydrogen and helium.

The permit was granted by the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs following amendments to Germany's Federal Mining Act that came into force on 2 April 2026. The updated legislation formally recognizes natural hydrogen and helium as mineral resources and provides the legal framework for their exploration.

Working alongside scientific partners, Tellus will combine existing geological datasets with advanced subsurface modelling to evaluate the region's underground energy potential. The approved exploration program includes reinterpretation of historical geological data, regional 3D subsurface modelling, structural and thermal analysis, stress field evaluation, geochemical and geophysical surveys, and both static and dynamic reservoir modelling.

Central to the project is Tellus' TripleH exploration concept, which evaluates Heat, Hydrogen and Helium within a single integrated subsurface model. Rather than assessing each resource independently, the approach aims to understand how these underground energy systems interact and how they could collectively contribute to future low-carbon, decentralized energy systems.

The permit represents another milestone for Europe's emerging natural hydrogen sector, following recent legislative changes in Germany that now provide a regulatory pathway for companies to explore naturally occurring hydrogen alongside other subsurface energy resources.
