Philippines DOST Expands Hydrogen Research with Focus on Natural Hydrogen and Energy Storage

The Philippines' Department of Science and Technology (DOST) is advancing hydrogen research as part of its broader strategy to diversify the Philippines’ energy mix and strengthen long-term energy security.

According to Secretary Renato Solidum Jr., ongoing efforts include the identification and study of areas where natural hydrogen may occur. These investigations focus on geological environments where water interacts with iron-bearing minerals, leading to oxidation reactions that release hydrogen gas from subsurface rock formations.

The Philippines is already a major producer of geothermal energy, and DOST is evaluating how hydrogen, including naturally occurring hydrogen, could complement existing renewable resources. The initiative reflects growing international interest in hydrogen as a low-emission energy source that can support both power generation and transportation applications.

In parallel, DOST is working with the Department of Energy (DOE) to establish a laboratory dedicated to hydrogen technologies. Research priorities include the development of hydrogen-based energy storage systems and battery technologies capable of supporting vehicles and distributed energy applications.

A key technical challenge identified by DOST is the efficient storage and handling of hydrogen, particularly for use in transportation systems. Addressing storage constraints is considered critical for enabling broader adoption of hydrogen as a fuel.

The department is also advancing development programs for electric mobility solutions, including e-trams and e-trikes, as part of a wider effort to modernize the transport sector and reduce emissions.

While other alternative fuels such as biogas are being considered, DOST has indicated that their scalability may be limited compared to hydrogen-based systems.

In addition to hydrogen initiatives, DOST recently launched a petroleum research and development laboratory in Puerto Princesa, Palawan. The facility is intended to strengthen domestic capabilities in oil and gas exploration while supporting the transition toward a more diversified and resilient energy system.
