MAX Power Extends Lawson Well Beyond 2,400 Metres as Hydrogen-Rich Fractures Continue

MAX Power has reported further natural hydrogen indications from the first well in its multi-well commercial validation program at the Lawson discovery in Saskatchewan, with drilling continuing beyond 2,400 metres after intersecting additional hydrogen-rich fractures in the Precambrian basement. 

The latest update follows the recovery of the first 63 metres of core from the Deadwood Formation and underlying basement. A further 57 metres has now been recovered from Cores #2 and #3, bringing total core recovery to 120 metres, with the third core ending at a measured depth of 2,397 metres. 

According to the company, the rocks recovered from Cores #2 and #3 are characteristic of the “exotic terrane” geological model developed for Lawson and generated the highest gas detection readings recorded at the project to date. These readings exceeded those reported from Core #1 and continued a sequence of elevated natural hydrogen measurements that began just below 1,500 metres in the Upper Devonian. 

Helium spikes have also continued alongside the hydrogen readings, while the latest gas detections appear to be associated with fractures in the basement complex. MAX Power is closely tracking these structures because fracture density and connectivity may ultimately influence gas migration and reservoir performance. 

The company has achieved 100% core recovery across the program so far and says the current well has recovered more basement core than any other single well drilled in Saskatchewan. The first 120 metres of core has been sent to AGAT Laboratories in Calgary for detailed geological and analytical work. 

The well is a 2.4-kilometre step-out from the original Lawson discovery and is intended to test the scale, continuity and geological character of the broader natural hydrogen system. MAX Power said continuous elevated readings have now been observed across approximately 858 metres through the end of Core #3, providing further information on the vertical extent of the gas-bearing interval. 

Drilling has resumed below 2,400 metres, with another update expected during the week of August 3. Following drilling, the commercial validation program is expected to progress toward completion work and testing of flow rates, pressure, hydrogen concentration and reservoir behaviour. 

The new results add to the geological case for a larger fractured basement system at Lawson, while the next phase of testing will be critical in determining how the observed gas indications translate into measurable reservoir performance.

It’s also achieving 100% core recovery and continues beyond its originally planned depth.

Following the first 63 meters of core recovered from the Deadwood Formation and the Precambrian in Core #1, as reported in MAX Power’s July 27, 2026 news release, an additional 57 meters has been recovered from Cores #2 and #3, with Core #3 terminated at 2,397 meters. Cores #2 and #3 feature “exotic terrane” rocks that produced the highest gas detection readings recorded to date at Lawson, even beyond the highly elevated readings from Core #1. This has also continued the string of continuous Natural Hydrogen readings, along with helium spikes, that started just below 1,500 meters in the Upper Devonian. Drilling has resumed past 2,400 meters and the Company looks forward to providing a fresh update during the week of August 3.

While commerciality will ultimately be determined through the completion program and subsequent flow, pressure, concentration, and reservoir performance testing, every milestone achieved during this program represents another step toward commercial validation. Together, these results are helping define the technical foundation for what could become the world's first large-scale commercial Natural Hydrogen system and development of a new primary energy source.

Genesis Trend

Lawson Complex #1 represents Canada’s first Natural Hydrogen subsurface system, a 28 sq. km area of focus within a broader permitted land package comprising 1,224 sq. km (the “Lawson Project”). Notably, multiple Lawson Complexes are possible within the massive under-explored Lawson Project highlighted on the map below (a “Complex” in this context is a specific area of proven discovery).

The permitted Aurora Project (628 sq. km) adjoins the southeast corner of the Lawson Project, striking southeast toward Moose Jaw, and represents what may be another set of complexes with many Lawson look-a-like features. Multiple Natural Hydrogen systems are possible within the Aurora Project, similar to the situation at Lawson.

The Lawson-Aurora combination gives MAX Power permits covering a contiguous 90-km-long area striking northwest-southeast (1,852 sq. km). Aurora is favorably situated along a major highway and rail transportation corridor adjacent to heavy industry and emerging AI infrastructure. Multiple other permitted projects along Genesis give MAX Power a dominating position in Canada’s most exciting corridor for Natural Hydrogen discovery and development.
