Colombia Confirms First Natural Hydrogen Discovery in Latin America

Colombia has confirmed its first-ever discovery of natural hydrogen in the country’s subsoil, making it the first nation in Latin America to report such a find. The milestone was announced by the National Hydrocarbons Agency (ANH) after exploratory drilling in the Eastern Cordillera and Sinu-San Jacinto basins revealed clear evidence of hydrogen emissions.

The discovery stems from data collected at three stratigraphic wells—Macanal-1X, Fomeque-1X, and San Rafael-1X/2X—as part of a broader geoscientific research initiative. While commercial viability has not yet been established, the findings are viewed as a critical first step in positioning Colombia as a future player in the global hydrogen economy.

Luz Stella Murgas, President of Naturgas, called the results “a scientific and strategic breakthrough,” highlighting Colombia’s favorable geological conditions for natural hydrogen generation and accumulation.

President Gustavo Petro’s administration has already prioritized clean energy as part of its development agenda. This discovery aligns with that vision and could attract international partnerships for sustainable exploration.

Geologists suggest Colombia’s tectonic activity and layered rock formations could create ideal conditions for larger accumulations of hydrogen. As studies expand, the country joins a select group, including France, Mali, and Australia, investigating white hydrogen’s potential as a clean energy resource.
